Maurice Béjart created many ballets to the music of Gustav Mahler: Le chant du compagnon errant, Ce que l'Amour me dit, Ce que la Mort me dit, Adagietto,A force de partir je suis reste chez moi....

In Liebe und Tod the choreographer takes a song already made to dance, Where the beautiful trumpets blow, with a new creation for Gil Roman: The Death ofthe Drum. The latter is choreographed to Der Tamboursg'sell, another Mahler song from the collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn.

"Through love, the worshipper identifies with the divinity and experiences each time the legend of his god, who is himself only one of the faces of reality andnameless.

Shiva, the third person of the Hindu trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva).

God of destruction (which is mainly the destruction of the illusion of personality). God of dance. His wife Shakti is nothing other than his life energy, whichemanates from him and returns to him, motionless yet eternally in motion."

- Maurice Béjart, 1968

Performed and praised all over the world for more than half a century, Boléro is an absolute must. A classic in the modern passing of time. Without furtherdescribing a ballet that needs no introduction, let us simply point out that Maurice Béjart returns to the spirit of the Rite of Spring in a very different style. Inthis sense, unlike most artists who have illustrated Boléro choreographically before him, he spurns the easy choices of a picturesque exterior to simply – butso forcefully – express the essential.
