Wilson NG/Conductor
Described by Tatler Asia as “one of the world’s most acclaimed young conductors,” Wilson Ng is an equally talented communicator, dedicated to finding creative and innovative ways to engage with audiences and showing a rare ability to transcend cultural borders, especially across Asia.
Recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Hankyung Arte Philharmonic, Ng will lead the orchestra in the 2023/24 season for several concerts in Seoul which will all be broadcast live on Hankyung Arte TV. He will also present the orchestra’s debuts at the Seoul Arts Center Orchestra Festival and the Hong Kong Arts Festival, where the orchestra will also perform with La Scala Ballet.
Other highlights of the 2023/24 season include debuts with Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and NCPA Orchestra of China. He’ll also returns to Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestras as well as the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, with whom he and mandolinist Julien Martineau recently released a recording on the French label Naïve. After attending PMF 2015 as a member of the Conducting Academy, Ng now returns to conduct the Sapporo Symphony in the PMF Host City Concert.
Born in Hong Kong and educated in Europe since adolescence, Ng’s musical journey started with the flute. He performed as a guest solo flutist at the likes of the Lyon National Opera Ballet before switching to conducting, which he studied at the Universität der Künste Berlin, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and the conducting academies at the Pacific Music Festival and Aspen Music Festival, where he was awarded the James Colon Conductor Prize. He later won prizes at prestigious competitions including the Mahler Competition, Sir Georg Solti Competition, and Svetlanov Competition.
He was named Associate Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra in 2018 at the age of 28, becoming the youngest conductor ever appointed to a post by that orchestra. Commenting on his début there, Yonhap News wrote that it was “as if he had become Shostakovich himself”. He maintains a close relationship with the Korean musicians and audiences ever since and has conducted several other major Korean orchestras including the KBS Symphony, Korean National Symphony, Bucheon, Gyeonggi and Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestras.
Elsewhere, Wilson has performed with many leading orchestras including the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, China National Symphony Orchestra and Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. He is a frequent guest conductor with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. In addition to conducting several of their subscription concerts, he lead the orchestra at the city’s largest outdoor musical event "Symphony Under the Stars and was called upon to step in for Music Director Jaap van Zweden for a performance of Beethoven’s Eroica, praised by Radio Television Hong Kong “Ng’s performance was infectious and full of surprises…under his baton, the HK Phil displayed a sinewy refinement”.
Although deeply familiar with the traditional Western canon, Ng is a passionate champion of Asian composers including Tan Dun, Tōru Takemitsu, Xiaogang Ye, Wenjing Guo, Lin Zhao, Unsuk Chin, Isang Yun, Doming Lam, and Ting Cheong So. He conducted the opening concert of the Beijing Modern Music Festival in 2019, and returned to the festival to lead the closing performance in 2023. Committed to supporting the next generation of composers in Asia, he is also conducting the 7th NCPA Young Composer Programme Final Evaluation Concert in 2024.
In 2015, Ng founded the Gustav Mahler Orchestra in Hong Kong, and still serves as its Artistic Director. Together they created “Musicians without Borders,” an innovative project where the audience enjoys the immersive experience of sitting among the musicians. He is also co-founder of the “About Music Foundation,” an organization aiming to provide free learning experience for underprivileged students in Hong Kong.

哈尔滨交响乐团
Harbin Symphony Orchestra
In April 1908, the Orchestra of the Russian Trans-Amur Railway Corps Brigade played Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture in Harbin, marking the first symphonic concert in China's history. This orchestra later evolved into China's first symphony orchestra—the Chinese Eastern Railway Club Symphony Orchestra—comprised mostly of Russian expatriates, and became the Harbin Symphony Orchestra. In the 1920s and 1930s, the orchestra was acclaimed as the top symphony orchestra in the Far East and became affectionately known as the "Old Harbin Symphony Orchestra."
Over the past 50 years, the Harbin Symphony Orchestra has become a shining symbol of Harbin, known as the Music City of China. The orchestra has performed with world-class ensembles such as the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Esteemed conductors, including Li Delun, Huang Feili, Zheng Xiaoying, Tang Muhai, and Zubin Mehta, have taken the podium at Harbin Symphony Orchestra, offering audiences unforgettable musical experiences.
In 2017, this century-old orchestra underwent a remarkable transformation. It embraced a new international model that combined the operations of the orchestra and music halls, aiming to become a top-tier orchestra in China, a leading ensemble in Asia, and a globally recognized institution. The orchestra has initiated a global recruitment process and attracted exceptional musicians from around the world, infusing the orchestra with fresh energy. Additionally, the appointment of world-renowned conductor Tang Muhai as the artistic director has provided the orchestra with new avenues for growth.
As a cultural ambassador, the orchestra has toured Switzerland, Russia, Austria, and Japan. Notably, it performed at the "Voices of Friendship" concert at the Palais des Nations in Geneva with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra. During the 6th Trans-Siberian Art Festival, the orchestra was also part of the Piano Concerto "Dream of the Red Chamber" sponsored by the CNAF. It was invited by the Salzburg Festival to perform at the event's opening ceremony and the 30th-anniversary memorial concert for Herbert von Karajan. The orchestra also performed at the 40th-Anniversary Commemorative Concert Celebrating the Sister City Relationship Between Harbin and Niigata. The orchestra's performances have shared China's stories through music, earning widespread acclaim from international audiences.
In 2019, the orchestra was invited to Beijing to perform at the grand celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Performing alongside a thousand musicians from top orchestras across Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou, the orchestra joined one of the most magnificent chapters in the history of Chinese and global symphonic music. This also showcased the orchestra's world-class performances following its reform.
In recent years, the orchestra has concluded major cultural performances and competitions including the China-Harbin Summer Music Festival, the Sino-Russian Cultural and Art Exchange Week, the Harbin Music Competition, the Schoenfeld International String Competition, and the National Vocal Competition, adding a vibrant touch to the artistic landscape of Harbin, the Music City of China.
Setting sail when the wind is positive, the Harbin Symphony Orchestra, supported by audiences and well-wishers worldwide, is committed to pursuing excellence and advancing the art of symphonic music, while building a global reputation for the city of Harbin.
