项目梗概 Synopsis

As a global cultural symbol, Hamlet’s dilemma queries the existence of each individual beyond time and space. The original Chinese musical HAMLET by Xu Jun drama & Musical, based on Shakespeare's famous tragedy, took advantage of the prism of contemporary theatre and integrated cross-cultural perspectives especially Chinese expressionism. Anchoring the eternal question of "to be or not to be", focusing on the connotation of "thinking and poetry", the world-class theatre artists and starring join hands to live the story on a brand modern stage.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is home from school to mourn the death of his father, King Hamlet, who has died two months earlier. Hamlet is disgusted by the marriage of his newly widowed mother, Queen Gertrude, to his uncle, King Hamlet’s brother, Claudius, who now has the throne. The Ghost appears to Hamlet, claiming indeed to be the ghost of his father. He tells Hamlet about how Claudius murdered him, and Hamlet swears vengeance for his father. Hamlet decides to feign madness while he tests the truth of the Ghost's allegations...

Premiered in May 2023 at Shanghai Culture Square, the musical Hamlet has received rave reviews and been very favored of audience all over the country. It's praised by mainstream media and experts as “singing our own soul, not someone else’s song” (Xinmin Evening News), “A successful example of Chinese expression in musical”, “An aesthetic highland for Chinese musicals” ... Its nationwide tour in year 2023 included 45 performances in 18 cities and has been very popular among the audience. This musical has won The Shanghai Private Companies Theatre Awards in 2023. Its key Art has been the Silver Winner of 2023 Clio Awards as the only Asian work.
