Moscow State Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre Ballet

Founded on September 1, 1941, the Moscow State Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre (MAMT) is located near Pushkin Square in Moscow. The theatre was established through the merger of the Konstantin Stanislavsky Theatre and the Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre. It covers an opera house and two concert halls. Regular performances at the theatre include classical operas and ballets by composers such as Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Puccini, and Verdi.

The Stanislavsky Ballet was formed during the Soviet era and is currently the second-largest ballet company in Moscow. With over a hundred dancers, it is only surpassed in size by the Bolshoi Theatre, a top ballet company. The ballet company maintains close collaborations with many other top-tier companies. Notably, Sergei Filin, the current Ballet Director of the Bolshoi Theatre, once served as the artistic director of the Stanislavsky Ballet, and former Bolshoi principal dancer Ivan Vasiliev became a mentor for the company after retiring from the stage.

During the Soviet era, the Stanislavsky Ballet built a stellar reputation under the leadership of then-artistic director Vladimir Burmeister, whose works not only made a lasting impact within the Soviet Union but also reached Western European audiences. Among his most famous productions is his version of Swan Lake, which was performed for years at the Paris Opera and Teatro alla Scala. Many art enthusiasts in China have also seen this version through video recordings. In fact, Burmeister's Swan Lake was created at the Stanislavsky Ballet. Burmeister also became the first Soviet choreographer authorized by the government to stage works for Western European companies during the Cold War.

Burmeister's influence on the Stanislavsky Ballet endured long after his tenure, instilling a unique style rooted in realistic drama that continues to distinguish the company. This distinct artistic approach sets the Stanislavsky Ballet apart from other renowned Russian troupes like the Mariinsky and Bolshoi, which focus more on classical Russian traditions.

In 2022, 24-year-old Maxim Sevagin succeeded French dancer and ballet master Laurent Hilaire as the company's artistic director. Sevagin is a graduate of the prestigious Vaganova Ballet Academy in Russia. His notable works include the one-act ballet The Perfect Mistake at the Yekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre and the production of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet at the Stanislavsky Music Theatre.
