Callum Smart/Director

Callum Smart quickly developed a reputation as one of Britain’s finest young violinists and an innovative pedagogue. He is celebrated for the sincerity of his singing line, combining ‘brilliant technique with the confidence to take risks’ (Bachtrack) and his ‘utterly convincing’ interpretations (BBC Music Magazine). Recognised as a rising star since winning the BBC Young Musician strings category and being a top prize-winner at the Menuhin Competition, Smart now enjoys regular concert appearances in Europe, North America, and Asia. This season sees him return to Wigmore Hall, direct the Northern Chamber Orchestra, and perform the Elgar, Schnikkte, Bruch, Mendelssohn and Dvorak Concertos. Previous season highlights include performances with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Hallé Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, European Union Chamber Orchestra, and others. As a recitalist, Smart has performed at London’s Wigmore Hall, the Konzerthaus Berlin and the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris, and at a number of European festivals. Now with 3 recital discs to his name, his latest ‘Transatlantic’ was a top 30 album on the UK classical charts and earned Smart features as Classic FM and Scala Artist of the Week. Smart is a Violin Professor at the Royal Northern College of Music. He continues his work towards diversification and accessibility of classical music with mentorship roles at Orford Musique, the Benedetti Foundation, Music Masters, and Tonebase, as well as his Instagram account with 60k+ followers.

RNCM String Ensemble

The Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, UK, is one of the world’s most innovate and progressive conservatoires. Through its programmes of study, students are offered unparalleled opportunities to build the personal and professional experience needed to thrive in today’s global music industry. The String Ensemble regularly perform with professional Guest Directors and Side by Side with the most highly regarded string players in the UK. This training model is core to the RNCM Orchestras and Ensembles’ programme, providing the best educational offer to all our students.

Comprising players at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, the ensemble of 15 players combines the elements of orchestral discipline and close communication of chamber music to collaborate as a true chamber ensemble. During rehearsals, players are encouraged to contribute to musical discussion, speaking openly about their ideas so that the final interpretation is a shared one. With a wealth of fine repertoire to enjoy, each musician thoroughly prepares their parts in advance, so that they can engage readily with those around them.
