Shanghai Chinese Orchestra
Founded in 1952, Shanghai Chinese Orchestra is the first large-scale modern Chinese orchestra in China. Being an indispensable part of Chinese music development, SHCO has always been known for its distinctive styles and masterly performances, as well as its many great artists who are revered for their significant contribution to Chinese music, such as Zhang Ziqian, Lu Chunling, Sun Yude, Gu Guanren, Min Huifen, Yu Xunfa, Gong Yi, etc. Nowadays, SHCO has grown into a full Chinese orchestra with four parts: bowed string, plucked string, wind, and percussion.
Yao Shenshen
Having graduated from both conducting and erhu major of Shanghai Conservatory of Music , Yao Shenshen is now the conductor in Shanghai Chinese Orchestra. Yao is the visiting Associate Professor of Tongji University and Shanghai Normal University Music College, and has been invited to be the guest conductor of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Macau Chinese Orchestra and Singapore Chinese Orchestra. He acts as the executive director of Erhu Professional Committee of Shanghai Musicians Association. Besides, Yao has won the third place in the 2nd Hong Kong International Conducting Competition for Chinese Music.
Synopsis
The "Magnificent China" concert of Shanghai Chinese Orchestra draws inspiration from 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. The concert is divided into five musical chapters. The first one is "A Great History", which conveys the heft and splendor of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. The second is "An Enchanting Land", which expounds the aesthetic spirit of music and harmony in Chinese art. The third chapter, "A Spirit of Inclusion", employs more than a dozen folk instruments to express the broad mind and vision of the Chinese people. The fourth is "A Mind of Persistence", in which the concertos of bamboo flute, erhu and pipa show the perseverance, determination and vitality of the Chinese nation. Lastly, the fifth chapter, "An Ode to China", demonstrates our respect for Chinese civilization and our love for the motherland.
