Plot Summary
In the Tang Dynasty, Liu Yi, a scholar, went to Beijing to take the examination. When he passed by the bank of Jing River, he met Sanniang, the daughter of the Dragon King of Dongting, who had a bad marriage and spent all her time shepherding goats in the snowy fields. Liu Yi heard of the injustice and sent a letter to Dongting, Sanniang's uncle, Qiantang Jun, was furious at the news and sent troops to the Jing River to rescue Sanniang. Sanniang's uncle, Qiantang Jun, wants to recruit Liu Yi as his niece's son-in-law, but Liu Yi firmly refuses. Liu Yi and Sanniang say goodbye to each other in the cave. Qiantang Jun later orders Sanniang to disguise herself as a fisherman's daughter and asks someone to go to the Liu family to propose marriage. On the night of the wedding ceremony, Sanniang teases Liu Yi and the lovers are finally reunited.

The Guangdong Cantonese Opera Institute was founded in 1958, with MA Shizeng as its first director and the current director, ZENG Xiaomin.
